A last one for 2009. Hype painting paints itself. You can click to start a new painting when all animation has stopped or if you lack the patience, click right ahead. I do love abstract expressionist painting.

Technically this animation is a cocktail of the marvelous HYPE framework by Branden Hall & Joshua Davis and my very own simple flash snippets.To all the old school flash people struggling with AS3: simply gotoAndPlay with that new HYPE Framework. Trying to learn the awfully difficult AS3 code won’t become easier, but you will be able to play right away. Things will get even more interesting when you know that a certain Dr. Woohoo just joined the hype…

This print is made of 2704 human figures. Of course based on the animations. (I know, always the same people. But I love my people!) Starting from a simple grid of 2704 different people I do nothing more than moving the people around the screen. A new print is finished when all positions are done and the overall scene surprises me. No hocuspocus, no complex coding, nothing fancy, just playing and twisting buttons in Illustrator and pushing squares.

Deus Digitalis at Orpheus

Installation in collaboration with Jean DelouvroyLocation: Orpheus Institute, Ghent Belgium try out on 12 10 2009.

‘Deus Digitalis´ is an audio visual installation by visual artist Hans Verhaegen and composer Jean Delouvroy. On occasion of the official opening of this year´s exhibition, this creation will be integrated in the characteristic context of the Orpheus Institute´s concert hall. The basic elements consist of computer-steered animation of the recognizable distinctive human pattern by Hans Verhaegen and the inventive composed sound layers by Jean Delouvroy. It´s the first time both artists combine forces.

The animation used for this installation is a version of ‘Gotiek‘.

Jean Delouvroy (°1967, Belgium) studied at the Royal Music Conservatory in Ghent (harmony, counterpoint, analysis, project contemporary music, jazz arranging & composition, electric guitar). In 1988 he won the national jazz composing and arranging contest (Belgian Artistic Promotion Sabam). Afterwards he worked as arranger for the Belgian Radio Television Big Band, where his interest in contemporary music was also stimulated. Furthermore he makes use of electronics. He creates soundscapes by recycling his own acoustic material, mainly in cooperation with other art disciplines. He lives and works in Brussels. (www.jeandelouvroy.com)

Bruzzel update

For a collector in Brussels an old work (‘Bruzzel’) was remixed and presented in a rather novel digital way. Bruzzel was a work I made for a group exhibition in Brussels (2000). It contained 80 drawings (50x40cm) in a typical graphical style. The 80 drawings were photographed and presented in a small traditional frame.

Visitors hardly saw that the little frame was in fact a digital frame. The 80 drawings appeared with an interval of one minute on the screen inside the traditional frame. The digital frame inside has an internal rechargeable battery. This simply means that you don’t have to see the power cord of the screen, adding more to the illusion of seeing real drawings.
